This game is somehow similar- in some ways I reiterate- to baccarat; and for lucky nine, the aim is to get a hand that sums to 9, or as close to it as manageable. When the sum goest past 9, the value is altered by subtracting ten from the concerned sum. Face cards and 10s are valued at zero, the Aces are valued at 1, all the rest at face values.
If you think this kind of game is never offered at casinos, then either of the two. One, you are not a gambler and you are reading this because you hit my blogsite by accident, or two- you have gone to one and only one casino for the whole of your adult life.
Anyway, this game is done at an oval table, just like in baccarat games. Actual field number would depend on the casino you are at. Regarding personnel, the table is officiated by a game's dealer, and it is his job to facilitate, to attend to wagers and to tally the commissions concerned.
There are 6 or 8 sets of cards usually used, but in home games, this could of course be adjusted. (I once attended a house game where they used so many sets that I thought there was a war, and the hosts would be selling the cards in case a famine comes on).

I strongly believe, that Amir Vahedi remains as one of the most aggressive card sharks in the sphere of poker professionals. One excellent trait of Amir is that his prowess is not confined to Holdem. He has clinched victories in Omaha, Stud and even HL seven games. This flexibility makes him a very dangerous opponent, and makes him a very good instructor too.
Eleven years ago, he won his momentous success in the Legends of Poker event, and 3 years from that, he won his first success in Vegas. From 2000 onwards, he has amassed no less than 85 cash positions in tourneys all over. The Big Moment though came in 2003, where he got his first championship in WSOP, BUT that was not the main event. IN the ten thousand dollar event, he gave a respectable finish of sixth in a field which was of course filled with sharks. A Finals Table in WSOP especially in the Main event is always a locus for the true sharks.
This pro was born in Iran, and during his youth, he enlisted with the Iranian army, and that was the Iran-Iraq war, lest you think it's the other war.

Knowing the shift changes would be a good idea, and of course, only if you are frequenting a certain casino. Here is the thing, very often, management people arrive just before dealers do, naturally, in differing scenarios.
There are casinos whose managers come in one hour before, there are those that come in 30 minutes before, while I know of a casino manager who need not arrive before, because he practically lives inside the casino. (He is married, that's the funny part, I wonder what the wife is thinking).
If you are an advantage player, bear this in mind, the last hour of the shift would be best for you. No matter how attentive a pit boss or a security guard is, in his last hour of the shift, he is drained from all the complains/issues coming from drunks, nerds, HIGH ROLLERS, Forrest Gumps, and God knows who else.
Next, as often as you can, ask for the comps/freebies. If you are not hungry, get the sandwiches or whatever, maybe you can take them home. If you are not interested in the ticket to the play, get it still. You could trade it with another gambler's basketball NBA ticket later, even if the latter came not from the csino, I've seen it happen, believe me.

As of late, according to reports, the population of Americans going to Canada hit a very low profile. Accoring to statistics, Americans hit 6.6 million visits only in the first 2 quarters of last year, and American tourism is still on the way down.
Casinos of Canada have been experiencing a great decline in gamblers, and here is a case in point. One major casino just hit the 12.1M dollar level, down by eighteen percent compared to the previous year. It is no secret that Americans give a great bearing on Canadian gambling sites. They particularly like blackjack, and even if not a high roller, a typical blackjack buff would keep on playing until the sun shows its face, or the wallet becomes empty, whichever comes first.
As of late, since Americans journey less and less to Canada, the blackjack games get less and less share of the revenues. Well, if I may give my take, I would like to believe that this is just a temporary development.
If you are familiar with Point Edward Charity Casino (it's in Ontario), they are in business all days of the week, and naturally, blackjack is one of the main offerings. Twenty-one tables in fact are committed to the game. It is no wonder that they too, have been experiencing the travails brought about by the decline in the tourism industry.

The first player would hold out his set (facedown), the one next to him would get a card from the former's set. When the new card results to a pair, this player would put it among his stack, then would let a card be chosen from his stack by the one next to him. So on and so forth, that simple, this would keep on until sombody would be left with the only Q in his possession. He, OK..LET US MAKE IT SHE, would be crowned as the Old Maid, and if you are interested, I can teach you some further tricks on how to turn this game into a good gambling affair. Then again, maybe I am just the one, it could be relative?
(For those who insist that this game is one just for kids, you have not seen what I have in the past, you would be surprised).
Here are some variants of the rules, which could make your sessions more interesting. Instead of taking out the Q, a Joker could be incorportated into the set to serve the role. Another, if your opponents are all ladies who belong to the "women's lib" genre, or somebody (female or male) who would turn anything into a gender issue - at the drop of a hat (any hat), then you can try to shut him/her up by doing this- mandate that the King would be the card to be shied away from, not the Queen.

There is this game, and its name is both trite and amusing, not funny, just
amusing. I am referring to the Old Maid game, and believe it or not, once or twice
in my life, I've seen people do this game while betting money, and serious money
at that. That serious gambling game, I saw it sometime in the early 90s, and you
know why it remains memorable? Two of the participants there became a couple,
that is, they married each other, the woman is now one of my good friends.
This is a very easy game (cards of course), and let me give you some of the
rudiments. If there just two players, it is quite special, for both persons know the
location of the Q. The art is the enticing (of the other) to select it by putting it
among the rest. Less fun I must admit, and if I may say so, if it's just the two of
you at the house getting bored out of your skulls, play chess.
If the field is made up of 3 or more, the concentration would be on the selction of
the cards per se. Using a set of cards, Q (one) and the jokers taken out, would be
shuffled, dealt, this would be one at a time. When they have been given out,
everybody would discard a pair from his own, and a pair should be of similar color
and rank. So, if you are so used to poker, you might be disconcerted, but that's the
way it is.

Scoring for Rubber Bridge: if one party has scored 2 contests/games, the rubber is won. Actually, it is possible for one to bid and still make the game in one deal, like, three NT would be equal to one hundred points. Victorious contracts of 4, 4 and two 5s would be no less than 100 points too. As the alternative scenario, one could get game in a set of deals, if these deals hold final contracts terminate at the lower bid levels. They are called partials, to illustrate, one could bid and make two at one hand (forty), at the following hand, could still bid then make two, equal to sixty. Sum would then be 100, sufficient for the game's purposes.
The side which scored one game could be said to be vulnerable, if both parties have it, then both are susceptible. It means to say, the side that has not scored yet, would not be vulnerable, and if a defender defeats/sets a contract, bigger points would be earned the moment the other party becomes vulnerable (do not weep, if you find it too complicated, it is not).
The score for the side ahead in the game is raised if the final contract gets doubled/redoubled, and remember, overtricks done at a contract are not counted.
Both parties have to do scoring, and this would be on a pad (pre-printed) or by merely drawing lines.

In poker, the ability to CORRECTLY read opponents, in the way of tells and others, is what differentiates the sharks from the fish. So, no offense, but if you are a fish, you might want to review the following, to be applied in your future games.
# If you know somebody as one who keeps on fidgeting and that is his natural self, be wary if he becomes as still as a tree. He could suddenly have the nuts, that's why.
# Learning the "secret tell" of an opponent is OK...but it would be more practical to just memorize his/her betting trends.
# He who glances at the chips rapidly after the game's flop probably has hit his set.
# If a player is staring at the board, he is probably thinking, in all likelihood, nothing worth bragging.
# Many newbies' hands would shake if he/she has clinched a really strong holding.
# If Mr Goose (first animal that came to my mind) rechecks his hole cards in the postflop, he may have a midlevel pair or even a draw, however, probably not a real fighter.
Wednesday, January 9. 2008
At the online games, the opponent is not there physically in front of you, so there no direct observing of tells. However, if you are keen enough, you could manage to check the reaction times of the competitors, the betting styles, and even how talkative one is (via the chatbox) would indicate something. Be observant, unless you don't care about your money and you are just playing for fun and nothing else.
# Be flexible in your strategies, there are more than one. One good strategy that proved to be invulnerable against the fishes might be kaput as far as the veterans are concerned.
# If you think you have discerned the tells of certain opponents, then start exploiting them. If you have to ask me HOW, THEN BY GOLLY, you are a newbie. Go back to my earlier blog entries (2007) and check the pieces. There, so, I'll see you at the tables, and if ever we get to be on the same table, please do not apply these against me.
I will consider that as your showing some sense of gratitude, ah-hem. However, I will not take it against you if you want to crush me into my constituent atoms.

Be friendly with the casino floor's OIC/manager: I do not mean to say that you should askhim/her to serve as the godfather/godmother of your 6-month old son, or to invite himto your weekly home poker. Just a little chitchat would be OK, know this, in so many establishments, a veteran floor manager is given the prerogative by his/her bosses to comp on his/her own discretion?
When you get to chat with him, and he finds out that you have the same favorite chess opening, or you hate the same NBA team (I am not going to name any squad, mind you), he may just comp you just because of that. Do not scoff at this, I have seen it happen a lot of times, and I am sure I will still see it happen in future occasions. One more tip, even if you feel that you and he are already in good terms, let me offer the comp, do not ask for it if you can help it. This would give you a concrete idea on how accommodating he could be.
Now, we go to another casino employee: the casino hosts. It would be a good thought to be friends with them too, as these individuals could put up credit lines, even free use of suites, or even the most exclusive kind of dinner they only reserve for the whales.
One last thing, do not just keep on chatting with them, remember, you are IN a casino. Gamble, you should be gambling my friend.

The moment you have perfected (or something very close to that) the concepts of hitting/standing, then you are ready to frequent even the big-time American casinos.
Basic strategy instructs gamblers to assume that the game's dealer holds a 10, that or the 10 would come to you. Here is the rule: when you hold a seventeen or below, while the dealer holds a face card, 10, 9 or 8, gambler would be forced (for all intents and purposes) to hit, and why so?
Odds of the busting (from the dealer) are low, a 17 is still not good enough, gambler would then hit. However, if the game's dealer exposes a ten and eight, odds of hitting below a 10 are small.
Some more tips: when you have anything from a seventeen through 20, stand. When you have thirteen to sixteen, hit when you hold a seven thru Ace.
On soft hands action, when your holding is Ace or nine, stand on any kind of card. When the Ace is yours (plus 8), stand on whatever except a six. When you hold the Ace plus four OR Ace/5, hit at two and three.

Heaven, or another life (reincarnation), believe what you will, (I have my own) but what is not arguable is this- Chip Reese is no longer with us, and the poker world is the poorer for it. This 3-time WSOP braclet owner not too long ago died at age 56. On that fateful day, according to an a very good friend of his family,Reese called the doctor to complain about pneumonia manifestations, however, he never went to the hospital. For all intents and purposes, he died while sleeping. (Let me say this straight, I do not know him personally, but there was one common party we attended together, I mean, we were never introduced, I just saw him at the other side of the room).
He hailed from Ohio, and arguably, he was thought of by many co-professionals as the strongest all-around gambler (poker) on the face of the world map, the emphasis would be on "arguably". He was another of the many pros who sacrificed college education to fully become a poker pro. Reese lived in Vegas for so, so long.
This warrior's most significant victory in the eyes of the pro's world was during the fifty thousand-dollar HORSE affair at WSOP of 2006. There, he, Doyle B and Phil Ivey battled it out in what was called (up to now)- " 3 generations of poker", and this event gave Chip the 3rd bracelet, after a "drought" of 24 years, funny huh? (If not funny, you could call it impressive).

In Holdem's NL games, when there are still others fighting for the pot prior to your move, it would be a good thing (usually, not 100% of the time) to raise using big pocket pairs. Cases that are otherwise, just call, and remember this, if there are folks calling prior to you, that pot would most likely be large enough that you would be contented to getting it without "blood" (meaning, without reaching any showdown). After all, this is a NL game, and if this is happening in a highrollers' room at a Vegas site, then it could indeed reach frighteningly high sums.
(Once I did join this kind of game, I brought in 50 grand into the game, that was an all-time high at that time, you would not believe it, but my bankroll was the smallest in the entire field. I felt humiliated even if nobody ridiculed it, there was royalty in there, a prince or something).
Going back, raise with the size of the pot if it's QQ, KK or AA we are speaking of. If it's a not-so-monstrous set, the advantage would not be so strong, check the flop and take it from there.
